Add to that a federal civil service and military that quietly ensured Igbo people would never again rise to positions where they could influence national policy the way they did before the war. This is what Gowon calls compensation. You do not compensate a people by starving over three million of them to death and then handing the survivors twenty pounds as though their businesses, homes, farmlands, and decades of labour amounted to nothing. You do not compensate a people by seizing everything they built and calling the theft "reconstruction." Real compensation would have meant restoring stolen accounts. Real compensation would have meant returning abandoned properties to their rightful owners. Real compensation would have meant deliberate federal investment to rebuild the infrastructure his own soldiers destroyed. None of that happened, and Gowon knows it did not happen, because he is the one who signed the policy that ensured it would not happen. An old man can rewrite history in front of a camera, but he cannot rewrite what a whole generation of Igbo elders lived through and passed down to their children. We heard the stories. We know the twenty pounds. We know the abandoned property. We know exactly what "compensation" meant in 1970, and it is nothing close to what this man is trying to sell the world today.
