In Germany Most Companys hire for a specific role, that they have to fill. Not for development of an employee. That's why leadership says all these thinks to keep you in that Role. Otherwise they have to find Someone new.

when you grow up you realise that work life balance is a lot more important. you can devote your entire being into a job then they let you go you have nothing. far more important to have a life.

While some companies do promotions like in the US, in Germany it's also not uncommon that if there's a job opening in a higher position they do internal or even open recruiting with the application and interview process, assessment and all again. Same if you want to move to a different department. It's only done if there are actual openings they take applications for in some companies. Not something you can get by just asking for it.

I hate the "higher taxes" argument. It's as if no one knows how the progressive tax system works and employers freely use that to dissuade people from getting paid more. You still earn MORE in a higher tax bracket. Period.

i'm at a stage in my career where i agree with the german on this one. my next promotion step would be to replace my manager and he does SO MUCH MORE WORK than i do. it's not worth it 😂

In Germany promotions really don’t make sense, I got an official promotion in a big company, and my salary increase was 5% before taxes 😂 It was also not possible to negotiate because they had strict tariffs for every role, nobody even agreed to speak with me about that

unless you really want to persue a career and your goal is to move up to a different tier and kind of function, promotions are rarely worth it. in my experience moving to a leadership role from just a simple worker position on the work floor only makes sense of you want a middle management job. and moving from a simple department manager to a general manager only makes sense of your goal is a higher management job at corporate. otherwise just stay where you are. small steps in the same function layer are never worth it unless you have higher ambitions after that more responsibility, more stress, more hours etc. for just a little extra money. i have learned that managing a small actual production team directly is the sweet spot for me. decent money and still the freedom to shut off at 5pm and any problems i can just pass up to my supervisor who can deal with executives and their nonsense and be available during weekends and whatever for not that much more money then i make.

Ever seen an American corporations organisational chart? There are titles all over the place that look like a thesaurus has had a dodgy kebab! They’re not asking for a promotion, they want more money. If you’re bringing more value to the role and business then go ahead and ask for more if you feel it’s warranted. It doesn’t have to come with a pointless new title! You’d think that a nation so committed to capitalism would have a much better grasp of asking for money?!
