It should be mentioned that in the second example, Plot A is more efficient because it generates more RENT. This incentivizes investors/developers to develope toward actual USE for humans. Plot B would be taxed the same, but without the rent to recoup those Tax losses. This prevents the current "land squatting" environment we are seeing today. While subtley disincentivizing inefficient structures like parking lots & mega mansions. Bravo 👏 ⚒️💪

So basically, this is the government projecting what the potential value of land is, and using that as a way to extract value in the form of property taxes, essentially forcing development based upon the economic value irrespective of the owners wishes. That family farm has amazing potential to be developed into condos so suddenly the cost of property taxes increases to match its economic potential.

it would of course make more sense to give property tax abatements to certain levels of affordable housing. that would solve the problem right up front. and it would avoid the inevitable land valuation schemes which you know would end up being a capitation on property taxes for certain purposes. so for instance, a multi-unit apartment building would pay the same property tax as a commercial skyscraper. because somebody has to make these land valuations. and that's going to happen in a dark room somewhere. OR even worse, they will price housing the same way as that commercial skyscraper, making housing prohibitively expensive.

You’re punishing the person with less money in this scenario. So that customer A can buy up all the parking lots up and make more money. Rich get richer and poor get poorer. What if it’s not a parking lot and it’s a house. This is pro investor

If I was going to have to pay the same tax no matter what I built there, there's no way I would build "affordable living" apartments. I would build luxury apts or condos. The value would skyrocket, because it's not just the value of the dirt underneath, it's the value of the dirt PLUS the luxury building on to of it. And it's still be paying the same as the chump who built "affordable housing" apts.

The next thing you’re gonna complain about is the fact that there’s no parking in Houston because nobody wants to build the parking lot because it’s not an investment. So instead, why don’t we just get rid of property taxes altogether and just text people on their revenue and it’s a flat revenue tax there is no deductions. There’s nothing everyone pays their share based on their income from dollar one. Done

Realistically, no one should be paying property tax other than at sale. You have a sales tax on at one time property tax but you should not be paying property tax every year for property you own that’s bullshit. Property tax was a way of shifting the tax burden away from rich people onto people that just own small plots of land and they need to do away with it altogether we need to tax the rich and not tax people just for owning a goddamn piece of property.
