“Ohaguro” is a traditional Japanese custom of dyeing the teeth black. It became popular during the Heian period (around 1,000 years ago), when black teeth were considered beautiful and elegant. Later, it symbolized marriage or adulthood, especially for women. The dye also helped protect teeth from decay. The custom disappeared during the Meiji period (in the late 19th century) due to Western influence. Interestingly, similar practices also existed in other parts of Asia, especially in Southeast Asia, where blackened teeth were likewise seen as a sign of beauty and maturity.
