@fellownurses: A silo bag is a sterile device used in newborns with gastroschisis, where the intestines are outside the abdomen at birth. Instead of pushing the organs back in immediately, the silo bag holds and protects them while they are gradually returned into the abdomen over a few days (staged reduction), helping to reduce complications. It is transparent for easy monitoring, flexible to prevent injury, and often has a ring to keep it securely in place. Nursing responsibilities in this condition include: Strict infection prevention and control measures, continuous monitoring of bowel viability (color, perfusion, signs of ischemia), careful fluid and electrolyte balance management, ensuring proper positioning of the neonate and silo to prevent tension or complications and adapting care with available resources, including safe improvisation when standard equipment is limited. In low-resource settings, improvisation can be life-saving. What safe and effective methods have you seen or used in improvising a silo bag? Share your practical tip others can learn from your experience.
