It is refreshing to have someone giving advice or knowledge just go, " yeah I don't know how this part works. but here's how the rest of it is." It is exhausting listening to people make things up to fill in their knowledge gaps that then gets spread as misinformation.
So thank you

I was also taught it was to prepare for a blow on a counter, the exhale tightens the ribs up.

I always assumed it's was for the same reason that I make a lot of noise when I take a hit in roller derby. to relieve the stress and pain of the hit.

we actually naturally stop breathing during a fight. Just part of our losing ability to reason and fine motor skills. So we just train to breathe to help ensure that we do. You can also load up on o2 right before a fight and it help a little more. some folks think allot more.

Interestingly, somebody who was quite good at Shotokan a few years ago told me, that they exhale aggresively with every strike so that should they get hit in the torso you're less likely to get winded.

in karate, we're taught that it also serves to tighten the core, which has a chain reaction on other muscles, helping to maximise power when hitting. I'm not a biologist though, don't ask me for more detail either 😅

Hm. I was always told that its was to make us flex our abominable to help brace for a counter in some way. "Flex the gut, or end up on your butt" to quote my old coach

So what you’re saying is that if I develop the ability to breathe through my skin, I don’t need to “ushhh” through every punch? Noted 🤔
