Baffles me that the major dragon lord houses of Valyria who collectively had thousands of dragons didn't just conquer Westeros, seeing as one of their minor considered dragon lord houses (Targaryen) conquered the entire continent besides Dorne with just 3 dragons.

I also think Dragonstone was a smart choice because it is volcanic, a miniature version of the 14 flames of Valyria where the dragons good thrive and more easily hatch eggs than in artificial incubators like we see in house of the dragon.
