@hydroxide: I’m tired of these weird fear mongering faux podcasters making you hate spinach like come on guys #foodscience #foodscientist #spinach #food #health #organic
"perfect is the enemy of good" this is such a good take that can be applied to nearly everything.

organic food is only as good as the soil it's grown in

I feel like people think organic=no chemicals, pesticides or herbicides. Which blatantly is just not correct. I lived/worked on a certified organic/biodynamic farm for a couple years and they still use a lot of the same stuff as unorganic farms do.

I do buy organic wherever possible, because as an ecologist, I have to disagree with you that conventional is not significantly worse from an environmental perspective.

I think people hear “organic” and don’t realize it’s a legal term with very specific definitions and that those definitions don’t mean regenerative, or pesticide free, or natural, or most of what they think it means. Like chicken eggs, it’s very unlikely that the hen’s living conditions are what you think they are.

It’s like when people talk about dressing and say that eating a salad with ranch is unhealthy or it’s worse than a cheeseburger. That’s just never made sense to me and is probably discouraging for some people. You’re still eating vegetables even if the dressing is high calories.

I also love the “non-GMO” labels on types of produce that have never been GMOd.

the lab I'm getting my PhD in studies how we can make fruits and vegetables healthier e.g. I study apples specifically. people ask me what the healthiest apple is and our answer is ALWAYS even with our research "the one you like to eat"

organic is nothing more than a marketing gimmick that brings higher profit margins to big agricultural companies. Right now at my regular grocery store a gallon of organic milk costs 4x a standard gallon. That is an insane expense for negligible benefits.

I think the whole organic vs non-organic debate is a good example of how people are often conditioned to fixate on individual "choices" rather than collective wellbeing for solutions. The responsibility is placed on the individual to make the best personal choice, even when said choice isn't actually a viable option for everybody. Thats how the solution to the valid health and environmental concerns surrounding our agricultural industry was to introduce a "new" product/method as the better "option" for consumers instead of the obvious answer of "don't let corporations get away with poisoning us in the first place".

The only reason to buy organic is to prevent chemical pesticide exposure to farm workers and nearby communities. There’s no benefit to the consumer. So I buy organic but only sometimes.

I agree that it’s not useful to tell the average person about spinach, beets, and other leafy greens being high in oxalate. It’s food fear-mongering. I have kidney stones made of calcium oxalate and my urologist told me over 20 years ago to be mindful of such foods. But not everyone has kidney stone issues and there are other types of kidney stones. As a side note, I love beets, spinach, broccoli, etc. I drink lemonade bcuz the citric acid helps prevent stones from forming.

I order organic but just because as a full time employee and student getting a local farm box delivered each week makes my life easier. I think everyone is already stressed enough and food should be something that brings joy and enrichment to our lives however that looks for each of us.

can you talk about how the idea of "non-GMO" doesn't make food better and genetic engineering in produce isn't evil? like, it definitely has some ecological problems but yeah. cause I'm so done with people not understanding the actual benefits
