@arjay_mccandless: Rise of the Full Stack SWE roles? Seems like new job titles are cropping up every day which expect you to know everything from frontend to backend to AI to DevOps / cloud. #softwareengineering #programming #csmajors #coding
AI Engineer is not “stitching together legacy systems” it’s a hybrid DS SWE involved in Gen AI integration which is very often green scope today

I’m an engineer with 9+ years experience. Went all in learning AI and haven’t needed to write code in 7+ months. I’m now thinking in terms of systems/structure/security. I honestly don’t even miss writing code by hand anymore. What job would be best for me? I’d rather be using ideation with my building capabilities. Also not interested in doing a proctored coding assessment anymore.

Forward deployed engineer is basically a business engineer (sales, consulting, representation & analyst), ai engineer and software engineer into one.

I’m a SWE and love building products and talking to clients. How would you say I go about finding and landing a role as a FDE or Solutions engineer? I’m early career 1.2 yoe!

“Stitching API together” is doing a heavy lift here. The whole thing is moving to agentic engineering right now and that’s managing memory, CPU, volumes, network ingress/egress rules, tooling, memory, building skills. I’d agree in the past but this view is outdated.

What’s the difference between forward deployed and full stack?

full-stack is just the baseline now — the real ask is full-stack plus infra context, which is basically a different job with the same title and same salary

What is your advice to ensure that we are still growing as SWE’s and not relying too much on AI to do our work for us lol

It sounds like companies are just adding on more responsibilities and increased accountability to SWE’s. That increased scope increase runs the risk of increased security vulnerabilities in AI applications. Frankly, the role should be disaggregated into separate roles so that robust DevSecOps are implemented during the whole SDLC.
