I tried to have a go once, I won’t pretend it was simple. In fact, it was one of the most intricate challenges I’ve ever undertaken. Yet, there was a deep sense of enjoyment woven into the effort. It left me with a profound respect and admiration for our forefathers, whose skill and dedication must have been extraordinary.

For clarity, this is known as Zellige, a traditional Moroccan form of tilework that dates back centuries. It originated in the historic city of Fez. Artisans all over Morocco still produce these tiles today using time-honoured techniques. Zellige is a distinctly Moroccan craft, rooted in the country’s own artistic and architectural heritage (it's important to specify this aspect because some countries tried to culturally appropriate this Moroccan art). It is characterised by intricate geometric patterns, with each small tile, cut and assembled by hand having its own name, and each overall design pattern also carrying a specific designation. The patterns are designed by master craftsmen, with years of experience, who then provide the desired designs to their skilled workers for the final creation.
