i disagree with the 'copying is ineffective and understanding is key' part, simply because copying can be a great way to lead to understanding when done correctly. An incredibly effective practice of mine, and many other artists, especially when learning a new style, is to trace a reference (learning how the strokes feel and lines flow), then referencing without tracing (to refine the same practice without traced guides, and further understand the reference piece), and then finally create something unique using what you've learned. What can start as copying can lead to understanding when done in a structured way, so I disagree with dismissing it outright
