my department almost always does "pass with revisions" because 🤷🏻♀️the process just feels outdated at least for my field

I failed the written portion of my exams because, with anxiety mucking up my brain, I forgot to include some required information for one of my questions. I had thought that failing the exams was uncommon and this was an indication that I did not belong in my program. It wasnt until AFTER I had spiraled that I was informed about how common it is to fail the exams. Talking about this part of the process is so important. I could have cried a few hours less 😮💨😮💨

Chem PhD here. Only 33% finish with a PhD. Daunting but what your committee said is key, if they wanted you gone they wouldn’t have given you the option to retake it. For the defense, rely on fundamentals to answer their questions. If you’re solid on those they will see that you’re ready to apply those concepts to the more nuanced ones. You got this!!!

i was just accepted into a phd program and am very nervous for my future candidacy exam, i get especially nervous when it comes to answering questions, especially coming from people who are so knowledgeable and developed in their fields. i seriously love this outlook and your calm energy. its easy to get panicked and be hard on ourselves, so im really glad to see you are being kind to yourself and taking it as a learning experience. you are clearly very smart and are also very well spoken, you should be seriously proud of yourself! you got it next time around. thank you for making this video

My faculty advisor purposely tanked my first go so I'd have to run his lab for a longer period of time. think of it this way, one advantage you have is you know how to pass next time. Also, Quals are the hardest part of a PhD. As soon as you pass, it's all downhill from here.

I was told I had to redefend my original research proposal. it super duper sucks. but this program is about training us to be scientists, which is mainly failure. we will do better in the future

Man, I hope all goes well next time! Our program has an informal, but really strict rule…your advisor, PI, or chair, will not let you go up for candidacy unless they deem that you’re ready. This has really helped many of the doctoral students pass the first-time around. Though, of course, many students also have the same experience you did. The stress and pressure makes it incredibly easy to forget things you know you’ve been studying for.

Before I took mine, I asked older grad students to help me practice. I think anticipating potential questions helped me to not be as nervous

I also failed my first time. I sobbed a bunch and it really took a hit to my confidence. A year later, I retook it, passed, and now have a manuscript in revision. YOU GOT THIS!! This is making you a stronger and better academic even though it doesn’t feel like it.

Ask and see if you can do a re-exam at the end of the summer.

Love your stance on this!! Also, take it or leave it, but in my opinion, a PhD chair (or other committee members) should not allow their student(s) to go into a dissertation proposal defense / dissertation defense if there is not 100% chance they will pass. To me, that reflects poor mentorship and guidance on their part. It is literally their job to ensure their student is well prepared to go into those presentations/discussions… that is their commitment when they agree to chair/advise a student!!

I’m sorry that happened. I hate how anxiety highjacks our ability to think! But it seems like you have really great PI and committee. I believe in you too, stranger!

I felt this. The oral part was the hardest part for me. However, I found that the best thing to do is to make sure you know the literature and can say why you agree or disagree with it. It got to a point where I felt like I had the papers in front of me.

I bombed so bad on my PhD Astro exam that I was allowed to move over to Physics and did much better. Getting a PhD is hard. Take care of yourself and try again next year.

I didn't pass my master's comps the first time because I hadn't received an email with the date. my advisor loved the retake and wanted some portions published in my thesis!
