Do not have a course of action plans, give them different loose ends, rumors, things to explore. That feels more free and the players can decide where to go.

forever dm here, instead of a world building tip, im going to present a logistical tip. record your sessions, even just audio. Then you dont have to worry about taking notes during the session, removing yourself from the moment. plus, you'll surprise yourself later, finding that youve said some things way cooler than you thought during the game.
be sure your players are ok with this though

Full campaigns are the BEST! Don’t worry about over planning before sessions, just be present and make amazing stories together!

write scenarios. and sprinkle them in as they come up. don't bother with writing the whole story. think of them as scenes. As for your setting... watch legend of Kora, or... fantastic beasts and where to find them. to get your world fit the times. hope that helps!

Only one tip that’s stuck with me since hearing it: it’s not the players versus the DM. It’s a story, an adventure. It’s time spent with friends, crafting an entire world, and allowing players to enjoy your world to the fullest. Let the players have their wins and ridiculousness, and let the DM shape and speak things into existence.

The best that I can say is to start small and build out. Note a couple of distinct locations, like a local deli and a seedy dance hall with a couple of NPCs in each place to interact with and, perhaps, a couple of story links with each or just something interesting about them.

Have a main character group and a main story based around them and their area. Then, create branch quests that lead back to the main story but aren't too complicated. Don't forget the backdrop.
Good luck, Quincey ✨😍.

I’m excited for you. It’s super fun to DM. I used to use Excel for my maps, kept track of all the hidden loot and creatures.

My husband was a dm. He would throw in weird weather. Like a kind of side quest because it’s torrential rain & they need to find a safe place to wait it out. He also drew basic maps to help him keep track especially when they were in the city

don't be afraid to use actual maps (city maps) and blueprints for inspiration! and if you find a cool idea, feel free to run with it and expand on it, rather than trying to cram as many cool things as you can into one spot. it can be overwhelming for you and the players otherwise

I am a Movie watcher for ideas. For trains or wardrobes. The Natural with Robert Redford. The Mummy with Brandon Frazier. Titanic with Leonardo. What about awesome homes like the secret garden. Or the haunting. Chronicles of Narnia

I love the idea!! Don't forget to include a map. That will give your players a more realistic approach at your city and you, a general idea of what happens at some places in some hours. So you are prepared 🥰💙
