This is really interesting. As a person who has gone in and out of that throughout life, I feel like none of the extremes is the answer. We do have an urge to participate in life, but if the only option to life is shallow, revolving around pleasure itself, it is not satisfying. And sometimes, if your environment is like that, you withrow. But participating in at least somewhat healthy life and community, living through instinct, pleasure, higher thinking all at once, either simultaneously or depending on the momentarily need, is what is most natural and healthy. It took me embarrassinly long to realize that.
