@1000daysof_history: On October 5, 2018, at a Sotheby’s auction in London, Banksy’s “Girl with Balloon” was sold for approximately €1.2 million. Right after the final bid, a hidden mechanism inside the frame was triggered — the artwork began to slide down and pass through a built-in shredder. In front of the audience, the painting was partially destroyed into thin strips. Later, Banksy confirmed that the mechanism had been installed in advance as a statement against the commercialization of art. The piece was renamed “Love is in the Bin” and became the first artwork ever partially destroyed during a live auction.
