Jan Flores :
At nineteen years old, independence was not something I planned for—it was something life required from me. Over the past year I have been living completely on my own while working full time and attending college at the same time. I earn about $630 a week and use that income to cover roughly $1,300–$1,400 in monthly expenses while continuing my education. Balancing work, school, and financial responsibility has forced me to grow up quickly. Every day requires discipline, careful budgeting, and the determination to keep moving forward even when circumstances feel overwhelming. My motivation comes from my parents. They are immigrants who came to the United States decades ago searching for opportunity and a better future for their children. In doing so, they sacrificed nearly everything familiar to them. They left their home country, their parents, and their extended family behind. For many years they lived without seeing loved ones in person. My mother even experienced the loss of her own mother through a phone call because she could not return home. Their sacrifices shaped the way I understand responsibility, perseverance, and gratitude. Recently my parents were forced to return to their home country because of the immigration situation affecting our family. Their departure was devastating emotionally, but it also meant that I had to face adulthood entirely on my own. At eighteen years old I moved out and had to learn quickly how to manage rent, bills, food, transportation, and school without the support system that many students rely on. What hurts most is realizing that the life we once had together will never be the same. Growing up, our family shared simple traditions that meant everything to me. We had weekly movie nights at home, drove out together to eat, and went to church together every Sunday. Those small routines made our house feel like home. Now those moments exist only as memories. There are times when I go to church alone and the pastor says, “Turn to your loved ones and hold them close.” In those moments I look around and realize that my family is thousands of miles away. While others embrace the people beside them, I stand there quietly wit
