@annelisethearchaeologist: It’s a big week for Iliad fans! The first instance of a literary papyrus found in a burial has arrived and it’s both very cool and very amusing. No mighty tales or heroic speeches. Just the catalogue of ships 😂 #TikTokLearningCampaign #archaeology #egypt #ancientegypt #History
This wouldn’t have been an “I’m out of stuffing, so I’ll grab the least interesting part of the Iliad”? I’m hoping not, but I was curious as people tend to take shortcuts when least expected.

What book(s) would you want to take with you to the afterlife? 📚

Let’s get into that head space. Imagine that we are listening to a recitation of the Iliad 2,500 years ago. When they get to the catalogue of ships we hear our hometown shouted out so we immediately feel a direct connection to the story. That’s just a Theory, but theory comes from theoria which originally denoted a sacred journey by ship.

No evil spirit would bother the mummy or be forced to read the catalogue of ships 😅 I secretly love it though

Did they not reuse papyrus as part of the mummification process? Like use reusing newspaper and finding sheets of it under floors, in walls, etc.

"We've always been like this" was exactly my thought when I first read about this. We've always been curious, and we've always had our niche interests. I'd like to think that person just loved ships. Bury me with a miniature of the Titanic, I suppose? 😆

Perhaps they couldn’t remember who was who, and thought they could practice remembering the list in the afterlife🤣
