FYI before everyone starts asking for this, Nurses have to be certified to do this. Sometimes there isn't anyone working that's able to do this. Especially in a smaller hospital.

Just a disclaimer not everyone numbs before ultrasound iv placement but 100% advocate for yourself if you’re a difficult stick to get US but some places don’t have this available 24/7 signed a nightshirt nurse with no US iv team at night 😅😭

Being realistic—most places dont numb you for an US IV. Also, the nurse needs to be specially trained to do those so it sometimes can delay care if they are short on trained ppl.

It's just unfortunate because most hospitals require the bedside nurse to try at least twice before asking the Ultrasound team to come in. And charging for it, is a hospital by hospital basis. Some charge, some don't. :(

Just so women can go in with realistic expectations, Numbing for USGIV is pretty rare and there isn’t always someone around or available who can do ultrasound. 8 sticks is crazy tho! Your healthcare is your healthcare, so if that’s what you want to request and it’s an option, do it!! I’ve had patients tell me they prefer regular sticks because in their experience those were less painful. And some people say the opposite. But I love to place ultrasound IVs! Or regular lol -ED RN

My last birth they blew my vein when they tried to do my iv and then got me a ultrasound guided iv for the next try and it’s such a better experience. Will definitely be asking for one again when I give birth in July.

Omg yes! As a nurse, tell us if ultrasound was the way they got access previously PLEASE!!!! It saves you/us time and pain❤️❤️❤️

Some hospital policies make them try before calling the ultrasound team. So when this happened to me, I asked for their best nurse at IV’s to check. She immediately called the ultrasound team because no one was going to get IV in me lol

I have a connective tissue disorder and my veins are like wet spaghetti when it comes to IVs. The ultrasound is the best thing ever. So glad they used it for you!

I’ve been an ultrasound IV nurse for over 8 years and it’s honestly the BEST job I’ve ever had! I love placing these IVs because it’s such cool technology and patients are so appreciative. I literally get paid to poke people with needles for 12 hours a day and people say “thank you SO much”! I’m so happy you had a good experience with this and congrats on your little girl!!! 🥰🥰🥰

As a nurse, by all means it is no problem asking for ultrasound IV! My hospital has a special team of people that does this. They cover the whole hospital.
