I had a bank account for my nephew after he was born every month I put some money on it. A few years ago they didn't wanted me in there life anymore. Yeah this money, I spent it on a holiday. Why should I safe money for a child I'm not allowed to have contact with, who can't even remember my name or who I am.

Unpopular opinion: if your gifts come within conditions, they’re not gifts. If you don’t like people’s lives changing, get friends that are in the same position as you… also, a gift for a child is the child’s gift, should they be punished for their parents choices?

I've spent hundreds of dollars on baby showers for my coworkers. I went through a divorce and had a small housewarming party since I had to start completely over again...not one of my co-workers bought me a gift or came to the housewarming. Even if they chose not to get me anything, just showing up to support me would have been a nice gesture.

I get the reasoning but if you’re giving a gift with conditions, it’s not a gift, it’s an exchange. A way of bartering for someone’s time and attention. A gift should be given freely or not at all.

I love this point of view! As a 56 year old with no kids - I get it. I have done and spent so much and in return - yeah. I get it. I’m lucky if they remember my birthday. But it’s so true.

"but gifts are ALWAYS unconditional!" Are they tho? Many teens have received money from their relatives under certain conditions. e.g. gifting for good grades only or under the condition that it's only used for a certain cause

Also, I absolutely love this point of view! It makes you think of how much we give away because we want to but at the end we might regret it because there were some basic principles that weren’t met. One thing is if you’re paying for each other when you are both in similar situations but another is when one put so much more money and time than the other. I’d only one person be if it’s from the friendship, is it a friendship at all?
