In 1965, four years before his death, Sheikh Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi, recorded a complete murattal khatmah, the entire Qur’an in the riwayah of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim, across 82 tapes. A committee of senior scholars from al-Azhar listened to every word. They praised it and certified it. Then he listened to it himself and asked to do part of it again. He submitted a formal request to re-record 32 of those tapes. This is what he wrote, on 2 March 1966: “To the General Controller of Cultural Programmes, as-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I have listened to the khatmah recorded in my voice in the riwayah of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim, and I have seen that in order to complete this khatmah in the way I feel achieves the desired perfection for the purpose for which it was recorded, I should re-record the tapes detailed below. This re-recording will be without payment, and I pledge to bring the review committee at my own expense. I therefore respectfully request approval to book a studio to complete these re-recordings. Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi, 2 March 1966.” The committee approved what they described as his pursuit of perfection. On 19 August 1967, the committee listened to every one of these re-recorded tapes. They praised them and certified them. Then they were filed away. For sixty years, the world listened to the version al-Minshawi was never fully satisfied with, while these tapes sat in an archive, recovered only through an old register. The director of Egypt’s Holy Qur’an Radio network later explained it simply: the original recording had no faults, and people had accepted it. But acceptance was never what al-Minshawi was seeking. He was seeking ihsan in his service to the words of Allah. Egypt’s Holy Qur’an Radio has now begun airing it, the recitation he believed was worthy of the Qur’an. You can now experience it. May Allah have mercy on him and reward him for every letter.
