As an American who speaks basically zero Japanese, I actually found it a lot more helpful to speak to the train station attended to buy tickets! My gf and I got stuck in Yokohama trying unsuccessfully to get tickets from the machine and once we spoke to the person in the booth we were able to get exactly what we needed. You can use Google Translate but pretty much every Shinkansen attendant knows enough English to help you get by

You have to tap twice because shinkansen has an extra fare charge on top of the regular jr train fare

Figuring out the ticket situation is definitely the toughest part. Reserving a seat you get two printed tickets which took us a bit to figure out buying at the kiosk

The main issue with them is they have very little luggage storage so you really cannot travel easily as a tourist on them

The tickets and the different gate lines/ station layouts were the most confusing but the service was impeccable. I wasn’t expecting HUGE legroom

another tip is to reserve the oversized luggage seats in the back of the car if you got huge luggage! someone couldn’t fit theirs in the overhead and tried to stuff it in our oversized luggage spot and got in trouble with the staff for blocking the walkway lol
