Don’t push all your blame onto the company, they aren’t responsible for your circumstances. You make it sounds so simple just putting you on part time for a while but it could mean for them they would run at a loss for that period of time. Businesses are stretched enough as it is, majority of small businesses are barley scraping by

You have every right to take them to fair work as based on what you said you meet the requirements to request flexible work, so unless the company has some insane justification to why they rejected you are in a with strong chance of winning and getting some compensation which will help ease the financial pressures while you look for a new position

If you’re in Australia - the FWA allows for you to request flexible work arrangements for care of children. Unless your company can prove that there is a business requirement that they cannot support part time, they cannot refuse a reasonable request.
