A Thai footballer was killed while 12 others, including a Malaysian player, were injured after lightning struck a football pitch in Sungai Golok, Narathiwat province, on August 4. The incident occurred at about 5pm local time during heavy rain as a football match was underway at Santiphap Stadium. The injured were taken to Sungai Golok Hospital for treatment. The deceased was identified as 24 year old Sofwan Awae, who died from severe injuries despite efforts by emergency responders to save him.
