Welcome to the Psychology of Color: YELLOW Edition. 💛 Yellow is strongly associated with sunlight, warmth, optimism, energy and visibility—but the secret to designing with it is understanding that not every yellow tells the same story. 🍋 Lemon yellow = energetic + playful 🧈 Butter yellow = soft + sun-washed 🌾 Mustard = earthy + grounded ✨ Ochre = warm + sophisticated 🌅 Golden yellow = rich + enveloping And this is where I bring in my Afro-Caribbean design perspective. I think about Caribbean sunlight hitting painted architecture, golden-hour skies, ochre earth, flowers, fruit, natural fibers and the way intense tropical light transforms color. You don't need a room filled with tropical prints to tell a Caribbean story. Try this instead: 🤍 40% Warm cream 💛 20% Muted ochre/golden yellow 🤎 15% Dark walnut 🍫 10% Chocolate brown 🪨 10% Natural stone ✨ 5% Aged brass Then layer natural linen, woven fibers, textured plaster, richly grained wood, handmade ceramics and ONE culturally meaningful textile, artwork or object. Now yellow isn't screaming. It's glowing. And THAT is the difference between decorating with yellow and designing with yellow. Color doesn't create luxury by itself. Material + texture + light + proportion + cultural meaning create the experience.
