A full vegetarian diet can be harmful for dogs if it is not carefully planned and nutritionally complete because even though dogs are omnivores and can eat many plant foods they still require specific nutrients that are naturally found in higher amounts or are more easily absorbed from animal products so without proper formulation they can become deficient in essential amino acids vitamin B12 iron zinc taurine certain fatty acids and other nutrients which may lead to muscle loss poor growth in puppies low energy a weakened immune system skin and coat problems digestive issues anemia and in some cases heart disease while plant proteins are often less digestible and do not always provide the same balance of amino acids as animal proteins meaning they usually require careful supplementation and balancing which is why homemade vegetarian diets carry a much higher risk of nutritional deficiencies than properly formulated commercial diets that are specifically designed to meet all of a dog’s nutritional requirements.
