He is left hanging between heaven and earth — suspended, helpless, alive. When Joab hears, he does what David begged him not to do. He drives three spears into Absalom's heart while he still hangs in the tree. The rebellion is over. A messenger races to bring David the news. And when the king hears that his son is dead, he does not celebrate the victory. He climbs to the room above the gate and weeps — O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom.
