The IFS — Institute for Fiscal Studies — has analysed Reform UK’s 2024 manifesto. Their verdict: the arithmetic doesn’t add up by tens of billions of pounds a year. Reform’s tax cuts are larger than Kwarteng’s 2022 mini-budget. Their funding claims are weaker. We know what Kwarteng’s mini-budget did. Gilt yields spiked. Mortgage rates went from 4.5% to 6%+. Pension funds nearly collapsed. Truss was gone in 49 days. If Reform win and try this, the bond market response is almost certainly worse. Your mortgage goes up. Your rent follows. The pound weakens.
