What is laryngeal tilt? 🤔 Laryngeal tilt is one of the key mechanisms that allows us to sing higher pitches with freedom and efficiency. As pitch rises, the cricothyroid (CT) muscle contracts, causing the thyroid cartilage to rotate slightly forwards on the cricoid cartilage at the cricothyroid joint. This small movement lengthens and thins the vocal folds, increasing their tension so they can vibrate at a higher frequency. This movement is subtle—it’s not the whole larynx tipping forwards or being pulled upwards. It’s a precise rotation within the larynx that occurs naturally in healthy singing. As the vocal folds stretch, the vocal tract must also adapt. This is where vowel modification becomes important. Small adjustments to the tongue, jaw, lips and pharynx help maintain efficient resonance, allowing the vocal folds to continue stretching without unnecessary compensation from the throat. The result? ✔️ Easier high notes. ✔️ A smoother passaggio. ✔️ Less unnecessary tension. ✔️ A more consistent, connected sound. Great singing isn’t about forcing the voice higher—it’s about allowing the anatomy to do what it was designed to do. DM “LESSON” if you’d like to understand how your voice works and unlock a freer, more efficient upper register. #vocalcoach #singer #singing #vocals #voice
