i need people to realize that not everybody lives on twitter or whatever. what seems unimportant to us is a door-opener to someone else. just because it doesn’t speak to Us doesn’t mean it’s absolved of its value. although it can still absolutely be criticized

It’s like criticizing veggitales for not living up to passion of the Christ. Completely different levels of the same messaging

I was 12 when the barbie movie came out and i cried. It was the first time i saw basic level feminism be the focus of a mainstream film. Now i watch back and realise that while many parts of it are good, there are many parts that good be improved and criticised so i completely agree with you

It’s a Barbie movie, not a college level course on feminism.

This was basically the exact review I left on Letterboxd… I rewatched the film with a group of classmates and kept prompting them on some of the bigger issues/discrepancies with the film, but I had to keep following it up with “guys I like this movie I swear!!!”

I personally thought it talked down to people but I came online and realized it didn't talk down to the audience enough. I really thought they spelled everything out and yet people STILLLLL missed the point

ngl when i first watched it, i was so disappointed. was that it? but nonetheless, the ending made me really emotional 😭 since it's a movie for a much younger audience, the speech had to be easy to understand, so that's a win 💗 i think it's an okay movie, there's good parts, others not so much

also its target audience is 10-14 it needs to be digestible so those ages can comprehend it. honestly they did it in such a beautiful way and i cant wait to show my younger cousins it when theyre older 😊

Icl I watched the movie when I just finished high school, so it wasn’t really a feminist movie to me, it was just more of entering into womanhood? But womanhood is also connected to feminism so idk

It definitely wasn’t the most in depth feminist analysis but it meant so much to me at a time where I was a trans man coming to terms with my childhood being socialized a girl and my mom and I were in a weird spot. Watching Barbie while my mom held me and we cried will always mean something.

there are a lot of people who appreciated it and a lot of kids who made realizations because of it and thats what matters

I grew up with a single mother so I knew what feminism was and how deep it went. I had to learn a lot on my own. We don’t get so deep into it in school if at all. I think the speech was great and very educational for young girls and others who were never exposed to feminism

i saw it in the philippines with my little cousin when it came out. she was 13 and she told me all the things she learned from it. that’s how i knew it did its job even though in my head i felt it could have done more. hearing her talk about all those things made me so emotional in a good way

What I took from it was that it set out to introduce basic feminist concepts, especially pointing out inequality and emphasizing the right to autonomy, while also not alienating people who were not familiar with feminism. I think that was executed well, even if I would’ve liked for there to have been a longer discussion on feminist history, specifically how it is tied to the history of the Barbie brand and its evolution ❤️

Too many people assume that every single person on earth understands feminism when time and time again we are shown that this is far from the point. I don’t care how surface level that speech was, because to someone out there it was like a moment of clarity for them, and that provides an opening for them to further educate themselves
