Backlund’s only problem was his gimmick - or lack thereof. In the ring he could work with just about anyone and have a good match. His matches with Big John Studd are a great example of this. I always felt it was a shame he wasn’t willing to do the “crazed Mr. Backlund” gimmick right after losing to Sheik. He still had a few years of good work left in him, he just needed a new look.
