I taught myself how to tie my shoes. I also taught myself how to write fiction, then later turned it into a career. I’m a bestselling author now.

I also used landmarks for directions. I can’t read a map for shit. I also used to read the encyclopedia for fun and am self taught on piano 😅

I tried to do my own thing but my mother wouldn’t allow me to. Everything had to be HER way. It wasn’t until I started unmasking a couple years ago that I just did the things that felt intuitive and not forced. As an example, something as benign as cooking bacon in a stock pot would have sent my mother spiraling. I do it now because it mitigates spattering grease around and on my stove. I stir hot cocoa with a fork. I’m unapologetic and don’t care what anyone thinks of it because I was punished enough as a child for wanting to find my own way.

plants are my special interest, so my landmarks were 'Turn left at the Chilopsis Linearis, it's totally huge it's bigger than the house it's so beautiful! Then right at the Encilias, but it's winter so they aren't flowering obviously'

I truly have no idea. My childhood and teens and 20s are just blanks except for a handful of memories

I taught myself to read in the first grade. I was put in the slow reader circle and didn’t like that. I started memorizing words and putting them together. Within a month I was in the advanced reading circle. That was 1976. I didn’t know I had ADHD with a splash of tisum until I was 50.

I would set the alarm but I would also trace the time behind my eyes. I don’t know if I’m explaining well. Like how you might trace the map line to a destination. But I did it with the time.. that was how I set my actual alarm

as an autistic adult I just this very moment realized that I still do this. I know who is home, when they're home and their usual patterns and I know immediately if someone's pattern is off. I don't even do it intentionally, its just something my brain notes for later use lol

I literally put everything to song. I sang my way through tests and reciting documents. All directions were given with landmarks. I still have to pretend to pick up a pen to know my right from left.

I journaled, wrote poems & stories.( Also congratulations on having friends as a kid. 😂) Everything had an aspect of imagination. I never went on just a walk. I was traipsing through a goblin land for example. P.S. I’m still shit at giving directions but still remember everything about the way to my parents’ best friend’s house - they moved when I was 5. I’m 49 now.

At 51, learning I’m AuDHD, my life makes a little more sense. Read encyclopedias and listened to Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart through elementary school. Constructed my own language in 3rd grade 🧐

That’s me. I can’t do maps, don’t tell me north or east, I need written directions and landmarks. I would only cite a car if it was there and was staying for the duration.

I learned how to sweep one armed with a broom. I just thought it was cool and it worked just as well. This was in fourth grade. The students had to clean the school because it was a small private school. My teacher did not like the fact that I was not sweeping like everybody else and made me stop. But I was doing a good job so it really confuse me why it mattered how I got the job done.

Couldn’t ever come up with turn left turn right fast enough while riding in a car so I would always say turn your way or turn my way. It was faster then thinking about which hand I wright with which was my way of determining right from left.

I make lists and never use them. Just like in school I made notes but didn't use them to study for tests. once I've written it down, I know it... I don't have images in my head and I don't remember...I just know...

if anyone describe or told me about ANYTHING, I would ask, "what color is it?" without fail. My family thought it was hilarious, but never learned to tell me what color things were when describing them.

I’m just starting my neurodivergent discovery journey & reflecting on my childhoood. I can’t recall anything specific in this regard at the moment, but my husband has always called me “systems coordinator.” Everything is starting to make sense!
