@corporatedropout_mom: An often overlooked dynamic in toxic workplaces is the clash between high performers and ineffective managers. There is often a friction that builds between the two. The high performer is focused on outcomes. Taking inefficiencies and providing improvements. The ineffective manager is focused on control. They avoid risks, see questioning as pushback and are working overtime to cover for their own incompetence in the office. These two clash and this often leads to an extremely toxic work situation for the high performers. This is truly what happens when competence meets insecurity. So if this you, remember that a workplace and manager shouldn’t be making you feel like you need to shrink to survive and be effective! #corporatelife #highperformer #officelife #effectiveleadership #corporateculture
I just work to my boss's 100% now instead of mine, which is about my 20%

I was on the leadership track and walked away from the field entirely. Bad managers ruin careers.

Yup, went from slated for C level to managed out due to this. I'll always speak up and it will always cost me... and that's ok.

I’m actually looking these all videos about high performers and toxic bosses and comments there just in one direction 😊. I’ll just want to ask everyone here: 1) are you decided yourself that you are high performer or it was literally said to you - it’s just reality check we need sometimes 2) are you aware that if we have to choose between one high performer who can’t work in team and minimises others are always worse choise then someone who can be team member?

Ironically, I became silent. And all of a sudden, my help was then needed. 🙃

And I think another layer to it is that often the toxic management becomes resentful and jealous of the high performers

This pattern has played out for me soooo many times at various companies. Eventually I shut down and stay silent while planning my exit. I hate that ego and insecurity get in the way. Iʼm not coming for your job, I just want to help!

holy cow this is me right now. it's painful but I've taken the "give up" approach. The boss loves it because I'm stepping in line, and I don't care because I get paid the exact same whether I overachieve and create conflict, or do nothing productive in a day. It's been about 2 months and I've accomplished exactly nothing because all of my tasks are waiting on the boss for something.

This was happening to me, but I didn't understand what I was doing wrong. My manager started low-key harassing me, and kept pulling me into the office "for a chat" where I was basically being gaslight into thinking I was doing something wrong or I was the problem. I was ready to quit, started looking for a new job, when all of a sudden my manager got moved to a new location. Life has been a dream ever since because my new manager is also a high performer and completely appreciates my efforts.

My director asked me to “manage up” my supervisor. I asked her is this not her job, to manage her direct reports. She replied “so I should manage down”, I replied “… or just.. manage?”
