This is great news! I’m curious how it works? I’ve seen self swabs for STIs but I’m wondering how this ensures that the patient collects cells from their cervix? Or is there a more sensitive assay for the samples now?

So, as a pathologist I have mixed feelings on this, HOWEVER, I am thankful there is an option for folks who would otherwise never get screened in office for various (and valid) reasons. I still see more advanced cervical cancer than I would like in this day and age.

This is the only way I was able to get cervical cancer screening this year for the first time at age 33. My doctor offered to let me do it myself in the office. She actually had me collect a sample for both cytology and HPV testing, which the lab confirmed later the sample I collected was adequate for both, but I imagine that's better done in office than at home since it requires more detailed instructions. But it's really not as hard to get right as people make it out to be.

Idk why everyone is calling this a win. Im a doctor and wouldnt even trust my skilled self to obtain adequate sample. But if the studies show home tests are non-superior than i guesssss lets goo

This is amazing! I would love to see this option for more patients! Unfortunately at my hospital we do not have any swab for HPV only testing available, we have to do all HPV testing through a pap smear still. I wonder if this will help improve access to these tests.

In the past year 2 providers I’ve seen had never even heard of hpv self testing (one gyn one pcp). I hope this changes soon
