@_jennasayquoi: Just read a book set in 1863 where the two characters said hello to one another. Oops! What’s your period piece pet peeve??? Should this be a series lol #victorian #victorianaesthetic #victorianera #thegildedage #historytok
"Hey is for horses" was a pretty common etiquette thing from older people well into the 1990s!

My Grandma (born 1922) used to jokingly say “Hay is for horses!” She didn’t really care about “Hey” that much, but she did think that saying was pretty clever. 🤭 She would have loved learning about this type of thing, btw. I wish I could call her and ask if she knew about the history of “hello”

I like that Hello/hi catched on bc it's just a greeting and doesn't have a meaning you ignore, like "how are yo doing?" It irritates me to say things I don't mean just because it has been established as a standard greeting. hello is honest. If you don't care about how I'm doing then you shouldn't ask.

In Poland, they answer with "tak, słucham" which means "yes, I'm listening"😅 Like whadya want? I'm listening; get on with it.

Often, as a kid, if I said 'Hey' to an adult, they’d say, 'Hay is for horses & I’m not a horse.'😜

Another thing that drives me nuts in period pieces is when they use the wrong telephone for the period. Nobody really notices this unless you know what to look for. One that I really remember is the help. They used phones with modular cords almost exclusively. Modular cords weren’t introduced until 1972. It’s one of those small details that catches your eye if you know what to look for

Ahoj is Czech and is a greeting which means "hello!" Also, in Early Modern English, specifically Shakedpeare, they'd say "hollah" which is akin to the Spanish hola, but it's pronounced like a 2000s rapper would say "holla," although that is from African American English and the 2 should not be confused with one another.
