As a xennial, I can confirm with full confidence that the pushback against AI is nothing at all like the response to the Internet in the 90s

Why are we assuming it's here to stay? Technologies have been abandoned before AND we could be legislating against it.

The launch of the internet didn’t bring such obvious & immediate negative impacts to our environment / community infrastructure & work force.

I view AI like I view crypto. Everyone said crypto was going to replace legacy banking systems but alas, it did not. It’s just a fad

I’m not SCARED of AI. I HATE it. I know what they’re trying to do, and I think it’s awful.

I was excited about the internet! It was different! It was egalitarian and utopian in concept and AI has NOT started this way.

I was alive in the 90s that’s literally not true about it being a similar fear.

The only thing AI has in common with the 90s dot com boom is that it's a bubble. 😆

Previous technologies were marketed with some but not too much hyperbole. It was like “here’s this thing you can use to help do X, it’s pretty great!” But AI is being marketed as “we’re going to force it down your throat and tell you that you’re going to lose your job if you don’t learn how to use it, but oh yeah we’re telling your employer that AI will help them replace your job no matter what you do.” It’s not surprising that there’s been a backlash.

AI, along with the end of net neutrality and the rise of SEO, has literally destroyed what we loved about the internet. It killed what people were excited about in the 90’s.

GenX-er so I remember what life was like pre-Internet and there was no fear about the Internet whatsoever actually. I don't remember anyone being afraid of the Internet. We thought getting those CDs from Netscape or AOL or whoever were fun lol. And I don't know all the infrastructure and everything for sure but I don't recall Internet using up all of our clean drinking water so…

As a millennial the scariest thing was the y2k fear that computers would malfunction on Jan 1, 2000. Otherwise it wasn’t fear-inducing. In the 90s, I had computer class in first grade. It was all so exciting!

I literally worked in an office that transitioned from paper to digital for scheduling and records and I cannot tell you excited everyone was about that change. No one was against it at all.

AI is a craaaaaazy grift. The financials make NO sense, and the tech is deeply unimpressive. It’s also not been found to increase productivity. It’s not going to continue in this manic hype state.

I'm 45. We were not afraid of the internet. We were Star Trek Next Generation excited about tech advancement and internet. AI is Matrix levels of horror.

In the 90s, I was "meh" about the Internet. In the 00s, I was uninterested in social media. Today, however, I am sickened by what we are seeing unfold with AI.

I totally agree that this time is different and I think a big reason for it is that the promises we were hearing in both of those earlier transitions did not materialize

Nobody was terrified of the Internet. Everyone was excited to get online! “AI” isn’t intelligent and massively harms the environment. And they’re using it to harm people’s livelihoods.

I disagree that it's here to stay. lots of things don't stick around. and the bubble is about to burst so it will at least change after that.
