@meghannmcuniff: A Los Angeles woman who killed two young brothers while speeding in her SUV refuses to take responsibility for "a preventable crash," the boys' parents' lawyer told a jury today. Rebecca Grossman's former boyfriend, retired Major League Baseball player Scott Erickson, won't take responsibility, either, so "that's why we're here, ladies and gentlemen, to find the responsible parties and hold them accountable, because they're not going to accept any responsibility," plaintiffs' attorney Brian Panish said in his opening statement this morning. "That's what this case is about, accountability for bad choices. Had Ms. Grossman been traveling the speed limit, 45 miles an hour, she would have been 566 feet away from the boys when they crossed the intersection. Had she been going the speed limit, she would have been almost 600 feet away. She never would have been there if she followed the law," said Panish, who is one of the most successful plaintiffs’ personal injury and wrongful death lawyers in the United States. Grossman is serving 15 years to life in prison for the Sept. 29, 2020, crash that killed 11-year-old Mark Iskander and 8-year-old Jacob Iskander as they crossed a street in a marked crosswalk near Westlake Lake in an affluent area of Los Angeles. Panish represents the boys' parents, Nancy and Karim Iskander, who are suing Grossman, Erickson and Grossman's husband, Peter Grossman. This is the civil trial to determine the liability and damages against the two drivers that were racing each other. The driver that hit and killed the young boys has already been found guilty of 2nd degree murder and is in prison. Her appeal has been denied. The burden of proof is a lil different in a civil matter than a criminal one.
