@be_physicts: The Kaman K-MAX looks like it shouldn't work. Two rotor systems spinning at speed, blades passing through each other's path with clearances that look nowhere near sufficient. But nothing here is left to chance. Swash plates and linkage gearboxes control the pitch of each rotor independently, adjusting in real time for speed, yaw, and roll. The two discs are phase-locked at the gearbox. Collision is mechanically impossible. The complexity exists for a reason. A conventional tail rotor wastes 10 to 25% of engine power just keeping the fuselage from spinning, contributing nothing to lift. The K-MAX eliminates it entirely. Counter-rotating rotors cancel torque by design, so every horsepower goes directly to the hook. Same engine as a Bell 205. Nearly twice the external lift, up to 6,000 pounds from an airframe that weighs 5,150. Mechanical complexity in the rotor head. Brutal simplicity everywhere else.
