I think people are interpreting it in the way of “I’m afraid this is how my siblings who I couldn’t bring with me feel about me.” It’s the eldest daughter fear that those you had to leave you resent you now. We fear that we are the assholes.

I also feel like it could be interpreted as the eldest daughter who moved away talking to herself bc she feels like an asshole for moving away.

I feel as a whole music is subjective. I think that’s a large factor to why music is so realatable

I mean he did literally say it’s about himself, but the beautiful thing about music is that we can all relate to it in different ways

It’s a song for everyone, a mixed perspective to allow more people understand that many situations might make them feel the exact same way. About themselves, about how others might make them feel, or how they feel about others. Noah writes for himself and for other to not feel alone.

I think of music as art. When a song is written, the creator may have an intention, but people are free to interpret and relate to it as needed. That's the beauty of it. At the end of the day the music is for everyone, tired of people trying to say otherwise

I agree! And this is why music is so important because good music is open interpretation for everyone’s own personal relations. As a fan, of course we pay attention to what he’s talking about but as music listeners at least I, always try to find a relating line or how does what he’s saying in the song relate to what I’m going through

I thought this was SO me! Then I listened to the full song and when I heard “you’re just an asshole” I thought… yup that’s still me 😂

Thank you! It’s the idea that you can’t runaway from your problems if they’re internal

Omg thank you ive seen so many posts about this song that do nawt match my perspective. Obviously it can be interpreted several ways but to me its about someone who left to run away from their problems but never actually changed and left behind the people who actually cared about them!

Actually no. This whole album was written about himself from the perspective of his younger self.

To me (as an eldest daughter) this song is 1000% about my mom. Every line fits her perfectly. It’s crazy how the same song fits so many different situations so well.

I can listen to the song both ways as somebody who has moved away from home and failed repeatedly, sometimes making the same mistake and sometimes making an entirely new one. I can relate to it that way because especially if you have younger siblings you left behind when you moved away and you had to come back home and confront that you feel it. but I also have had people in my life who are trying to change or working on themselves at least with their words and their actions never show it. and I think the beautiful thing about art is when it can have multiple meanings like that

That’s what’s powerful about music. One persons interpretation of a song will not be another person’s interpretation.

From what I’ve taken from it, the line before the chorus is “the devil shows up on your dashboard again” meaning this is self reflecting what you think others must think of you for choosing to leave and work on yourself. It’s your guilt of leaving.
