Well the cushions do go on top too. He is only showing how sturdy the base is. I have one of these couches and I have restored the base myself and then put the cushions back on and they are the most comfortable couches to sit on.

I’m pretty sure that is a sofa without its cushions on it. Remove all the cushions from your sofa and that is what he has reupholstered.
