If I were Minister for Finance, ETF tax in Ireland would look completely different. 🇮🇪👇 As a Chartered Tax Advisor, it’s clear our current system creates unnecessary inequalities and holds back retail investors. Here are 5 common-sense ETF changes I’d introduce in Budget 2027: 1️⃣ Level the Playing Field: Foreign investors in Irish ETFs get all the upside without the burden of deemed disposal. Irish domestic investors deserve the exact same treatment. 2️⃣ Scrap Deemed Disposal: Most people buy ETFs to supplement retirement. Tax will naturally be collected when shares are sold. Concerns about tax leakage are massively overstated considering our national pension deficit. 3️⃣ Bring ETFs into CGT & Income Tax: Tax gains at CGT rates and dividends at marginal income tax + USC/PRSI. Equity markets have historically averaged 9–10% annually - bringing investors off low-yielding bank deposits grows the overall tax take for the State over time. 4️⃣ Allow Loss Relief & Annual Exemptions: If you make a loss on an ETF, you should be able to offset it against other gains. Applying the annual CGT exemption brings ETFs in line with regular share trading. 5️⃣ Tax Accumulating Dividends: For fairness, dividend tax should apply to both distributing and accumulating ETFs. The true benefit of accumulating ETFs should be convenience and lower transaction costs - not tax avoidance relative to direct stock investors. Which of these 5 reforms would make the biggest difference to your portfolio? Drop your thoughts below! 💬👇
