@sciencefunn: Tiny ocean organisms called phytoplankton act like microscopic plants, using sunlight to do photosynthesis and produce oxygen. Because they cover huge areas of the ocean, they generate about 50% (or more) of Earth’s oxygen. So a big chunk of the air you breathe is linked to them. But it’s not as simple as the ocean constantly “giving” us oxygen. A lot of that oxygen gets used up again by marine life, so the ocean is really a balanced system cycling oxygen, not just producing it.
