This has always been my rough assumption, but sometimes the TIMING of a new ad is what feels uncanny. I bet some of that can be explained by a selective attention bias (meaning: an ad may have been in my feed for awhile, but I’m only noticing it now because it was just top of mind in a conversation). But at times I’m still very creeped out by it haha. Hence the “they’re listening to us” feeling.

lol good luck explaining this to people. recommendation systems have been better and cheaper than global voice recording and messy text analysis. the former has been good since 2010? 2015? the latter got good two years ago

Another perspective: one time i was chatting with colleagues about Vietnamese traditional dress ads showing up on my fb feed months before our Lunar New Year. We started talking about this one model who’s always in those shoots, and i said i hadn’t seen her at all. They told me she’d just modeled for shop A. I was like, i saw the dresses from shop A but not her. After the chat, as a reflex, i checked my fb, lo and behold, the very first thing on my feed, was an ad of that model modeling for shop A. That was the nail on the coffin for me bc i can’t think of any reason how it could happen if the app hasn’t listened to us
