we hear this word a lot, but what actually is dopamine? Lets talk bout it. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in how we feel pleasure. It is commonly associated with the brain’s reward system and is involved in various functions such as motivation, reinforcement, and movement. However, this same “feel-good” system can lead to addiction when overstimulated by drugs or other addictive behaviours. In a very over-generalized/simplified way, let’s look at ‘CHEAP’ vs. ‘REAL’ dopamine: —> CHEAP dopamine: refers to the quick, easy-to-obtain rewards or pleasures that provide a temporary boost in dopamine levels, including things like junk food, sex, social media, or other instant gratifications that are readily available but may not provide long-lasting satisfaction or fulfillment —> REAL dopamine: refers to the deeper, more intrinsically fulfilling rewards that come from pursuing and achieving meaningful goals, building relationships, or engaging in activities that align with our values and aspirations. CONSEQUENCES? —> Cheap dopamine can be detrimental because it can lead to a cycle of seeking immediate rewards without considering long-term consequences, contributing to addictive behaviours and a reliance on short-term fixes for happiness NATURALLY BOOSTING DOPAMINE: —> Maintaining a healthy diet that includes foods rich in tyrosine (the protein needed to make dopamine), including nuts, seeds, dairy, and meat —> Exercise, like running, is regarded as a source of “real” dopamine because it stimulates dopamine release in the brain through natural, healthy mechanisms. This results in sensations of pleasure and reward, enhances mood, alleviates symptoms of depression and anxiety, and fosters general well-being. In contrast to “cheap” dopamine sources, exercise offers enduring advantages, such as heightened dopamine receptor density in the brain. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4684895/ https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/dopamine-the-pathway-to-pleasure https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6135092/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4684895/ • • • #dopamine #Running #runnershigh #runner #runningmotivation #workoutmotivation #fitfam
