🕌 Solo Travel in the Muslim World 🕌 Every time I get back from a solo trip to a Muslim country, someone inevitably asks me, “Yeah…but how did the men treat you?” Full honesty: men in Muslim countries treat me FAR better than men almost anywhere else. Here I share a few anecdotes about interaction with male strangers on my travels in Lebanon, Tajikistan, and Kosovo. When you travel internationally, it’s a process of unlearning much of what you were taught. And it made me realize that Islamophobia is baked into virtually everything. I was 17 when 9/11 happened, and the latent simmering Islamophobia of the United States spilled over to new levels. In my nearly all white hometown, people were waving flags and being kind to each other. My neighbors had no idea that vaguely Muslim-looking people were attacked, beaten, had their homes and businesses vandalized, made women afraid to cover themselves in public. And so much of that Islamophobia is still engrained in people. It shows up in comments like, “Yeah, but how did the men treat you?” When you actually travel to the big, so-called scary Middle East, or Central Asia, or anywhere in Indonesia that isn’t Bali, you will experience the most welcoming hospitality and the kindest, most caring people. I recommend that all travelers visit a Muslim part of the world to experience this. But of course, the people who need to the most never will.
