When your finger presses against a surface, you feel solid contact. But at the atomic level, no direct touch happens. Atoms are mostly empty space. A dense nucleus surrounded by an electron cloud.
As your hand approaches an object, the electrons in both materials start interacting. Because electrons all have negative charge, they repel each other with strong electromagnetic force.
That repulsion is what you feel as “touch.” It’s resistance, not contact. Quantum mechanics backs this up through the Pauli exclusion principle, which stops electrons from occupying the same quantum state. This keeps matter from collapsing into itself.
So you’re not touching your phone right now. You’re hovering on a cushion of electromagnetic repulsion. Reality is stranger than it feels.
