For many a tragic giant, our knowledge about it is not only derived from history but also from legends and myths. Founded in 285 BCE in Alexandria, Egypt, it thrived over the course of multiple centuries as the capital of knowledge and learning. While its downfall is often tragically described as a burning of the entire library and its papyrus scrolls, famously ignited by Julius Caesar’s troops in 48 BCE, the destruction did not take place in one single catastrophe, but rather as a gradual fading process over centuries. Political instability, funding cuts, and repeated damages constituted some of the leading causes. It was not until the late 4th century CE that the library ceased functioning as a major institution. “When I think of the library of Alexandria and of the fact that, although it burnt down, people continue to sort the letters of the alphabet according to that tradition, then that makes certain expressions of modernity, even of interventions on the textual level, possible”.
