@filmtheoryco: That ending in Whiplash is insane to me, because it’s way deeper than just a performance. Neiman doesn’t walk back on that stage to fix anything. He walks back on because he’s not done proving himself. Fletcher sets him up to fail, straight up embarrass him, and for a second you think it’s over. But then Neiman flips it. He doesn’t run, he takes over the entire moment. What gets me is this isn’t really a victory. It feels like one, but it’s not clean. Fletcher finally sees what he’s been pushing for, and Neiman finally gets that look of approval he’s been chasing the whole movie. And when they lock eyes, you can tell they both understand exactly what just happened. But it’s kinda messed up when you think about it. Neiman didn’t beat Fletcher… he became exactly what Fletcher wanted him to be. That solo at the end isn’t just him going off. It’s him giving everything up just to be great. 🎬 | Clip from Whiplash (2014), used for commentary and discussion.
