I will always offer, but if a friend is firm on ‘I’ll do it’ then I don’t push because it’s likely because they’ve got a system. At casual get together and family events we don’t even ask, it’s just automatically a group task

This is how some stuff end up in the dishwasher when they are not dishwasher safe. That girl is exhausting.

I get this but also I think the other thing OP was saying is that part of building a community is bringing in your guests into your world and teaching them how to help and taking the extra time to explain so that next time it feels more seamless. So it’s less about dinner parties and more about community, pitching in and genuine connections

I love that bit of the night when it’s just a couple of friends and you all tidy up and then have another drink

I also just want my guests to relax and for me to sit down with them. And I’ll clean later.

we know what chargers like… I bet the one u have is from pottery barn. but when your hosted you help and clean. When it’s a community type of gathering then don’t be that lazy guest that don’t wanna put any effort to help ur fried and u ask what help they need not just start putting things in the kitchen. thats not even the point it could be just disposables and it could be the same exact result. asking if they need help is a start

I guarantee that Isabelle’s friends offer and she says no because she has a system!

And it’s so hard when you want to be grateful for the help but you have a specific way of doing things not to be naggy but to care for your belongings you love

I personally bring out a lot of my antique/special pieces when I host that I don’t want being cleaned up by others at the end of a long night when people have been drinking or are eager to get home. I’d much rather take my time to clean up myself to protect the items!

Idk man, we still wash the dishes and put them away and wipe things down. You ask, hand wash or dishwasher and boom it’s easy.

I also feel it just ruins the vibe. Like I invited you to my house for dinner. Not to clean up. I just like to make sure my guests have a night off where all they need to worry about is dressing up and having a nice meal 😁

Totally agree! It’s helpful for people to carry plates in or stack dishwasher but that’s it. I have lots of vintage glassware that can’t go in the dishwasher and I don’t want to have to give my life story at the end of the night

Also, she said it’s not showing community mindedness, implying all the labor is on one person/couple, but presumably you share around the hosting a bit. And a few close friends is absolutely different to a 10 person gathering afterwards like why do we want 10 people doing a working bee after dinner it’s not a high school camp

I HATE when everything is piled in the sink. I can’t clean anything if everything is piled in the sink. I’ll also have to rearrange the dishwasher.

Luckily I have people that know simple stuff on how to clean, if I had useless friends then they be invited over. Leave them be guys, these people will fight anyone when they lack understanding of community. You act like it’s a monumental task for someone to do something so simple, it’s picking up and not that deep but by the comments you need a masters degree.

explain the recycling and garbage she went around collecting then? Even when it's not close friends I help by gathering items and throwing out trash and bottles lying around
