Because of immigration, I lived the ages 3–12 without the physical presence of my father. My mother had problems with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and, unfortunately, got deported. Me being a toddler, I had no other option but to go with her and live in Mexico. I’m currently 16, and I can only imagine what mental toll my father must have experienced throughout those 9 years of separation, seeing me grow up through pictures instead of being there physically. I was too young to understand the severity of the situation. Now, being 16, I’m more aware of my father’s feelings as well as my mother’s. I’ve learned to respect their decisions and listen to them whenever it’s necessary. The lesson of this story is to appreciate your parents, because unfortunately for these children, their parents are being wrongfully prosecuted by the government just because they don’t have a piece of paper that says “citizen.” Nobody is illegal on stolen land.
