Roxie Roker (August 28, 1929 – December 2, 1995) was an American actress and television personality, best known for her groundbreaking role as Helen Willis on the CBS sitcom The Jeffersons. Her portrayal of Helen, part of one of the first interracial couples depicted on prime-time television, marked a significant moment in TV history. Born in Miami, Florida, Roker was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Howard University, where she studied drama and participated in the Howard Players, touring internationally in 1949. After graduation, she moved to New York City, working in an office while appearing in off-Broadway plays. She became a full-time actress after joining the Negro Ensemble Company, where she appeared in plays such as Ododo and Rosalee Pritchard. In 1974, Roker won an Obie Award and was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance as Mattie Williams in The River Niger. She also worked as a reporter on WNEW-TV in New York during the 1970s, hosting a public affairs show called Inside Bed-Stuy. Beyond The Jeffersons, Roker appeared in numerous television shows, including Roots, Punky Brewster, Murder, She Wrote, The Love Boat, and A Different World. She also had roles in the film Claudine and the TV miniseries Roots. Roker was married to television producer Sy Kravitz from 1962 until their divorce in 1985. They had one son, musician Lenny Kravitz, making Roker the grandmother of actress Zoë Kravitz. She was also a second cousin once removed of weather anchor Al Roker. An advocate for children's welfare, Roker was recognized by the city of Los Angeles for her community work. She passed away from breast cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 66.
